Why isn't Jin the leader if he's the oldest?

Why isn't Jin the leader if he's the oldest?

The Age Order λ‚˜μ΄ μ„œμ—΄

In Korea, age isn't just a number β€” it shapes how you speak, how you act, and how you relate to others. BTS follows this strictly. Even their official photocards are arranged by age, not alphabetically:

🐹 Jin (oldest, 1992)
🐱 Suga (1993)
🐿️ J-Hope (1994) = 친ꡬ
🐨 RM (1994) = 친ꡬ
πŸ₯ Jimin (1995) = 친ꡬ
🐻 V (1995) = 친ꡬ
🐰 Jungkook (youngest, 1997)

So BTS actually has 5 age levels, not 7. J-Hope and RM are "chingu" (친ꡬ, same-age friends), and so are Jimin and V. Between them, there's no hierarchy β€” they speak casually and joke freely as equals.

This is why you'll notice Jimin and V have a uniquely close, playful dynamic β€” they're same-age friends. Same with J-Hope and RM.

But RM is the leader. Why?

RM was the first member recruited to BTS. His lyrics and philosophy became the spiritual foundation of the group. He's the one who shaped what BTS stands for. That's why he became the leader β€” not because of age, but because of his role as the voice and vision of BTS.

So how does it work?

Every member deeply respects RM as their leader. This is a commitment they've kept since day one β€” from debut to today.

At the same time, RM respects Jin and Suga as his "hyungs" (ν˜•) β€” older brothers. And J-Hope, being the same age as RM, also calls Jin and Suga "hyung" with the same respect.

In Korea, calling someone "hyung" isn't just a word. It carries real weight: care, respect, and trust.

The unwritten rules BTS still follows

"But doesn't that make friendship difficult?"

International fans often ask this. The answer is the opposite. BTS members say these rules make their bond stronger, not weaker. Knowing your role, respecting boundaries, and honoring each other β€” that's what built the family-like bond that BTS is famous for. The structure gives them safety to be truly close.

As a Korean ARMY, I see it this way πŸ’œ

In Korean culture, having clear roles doesn't limit love β€” it deepens it. When Jungkook calls Jin "hyung" with a smile, when RM bows slightly to Suga after a performance, when Jimin and V wrestle like only same-age best friends can, when all seven stand in age order on stage β€” those small moments carry a depth of affection that's hard to translate into English.

But now you know what you're seeing. πŸ’œ
