In Korea, age isn't just a number β it shapes how you speak, how you act, and how you relate to others. BTS follows this strictly. Even their official photocards are arranged by age, not alphabetically:
So BTS actually has 5 age levels, not 7. J-Hope and RM are "chingu" (μΉκ΅¬, same-age friends), and so are Jimin and V. Between them, there's no hierarchy β they speak casually and joke freely as equals.
This is why you'll notice Jimin and V have a uniquely close, playful dynamic β they're same-age friends. Same with J-Hope and RM.
RM was the first member recruited to BTS. His lyrics and philosophy became the spiritual foundation of the group. He's the one who shaped what BTS stands for. That's why he became the leader β not because of age, but because of his role as the voice and vision of BTS.
Every member deeply respects RM as their leader. This is a commitment they've kept since day one β from debut to today.
At the same time, RM respects Jin and Suga as his "hyungs" (ν) β older brothers. And J-Hope, being the same age as RM, also calls Jin and Suga "hyung" with the same respect.
In Korea, calling someone "hyung" isn't just a word. It carries real weight: care, respect, and trust.
International fans often ask this. The answer is the opposite. BTS members say these rules make their bond stronger, not weaker. Knowing your role, respecting boundaries, and honoring each other β that's what built the family-like bond that BTS is famous for. The structure gives them safety to be truly close.
